Nicolas van der Merwe has been making his own wines for around 25 years. He realized his dream in 1999 with the first vintage of Mas Nicolas. He comes from a family of wheat farmers and turned to viticulture during his time at the agricultural college in Elsenburg. After graduating, he went to Germany, where he attended the country’s oldest viticultural school, the LVWO Weinsberg.
In South Africa, Nico van der Merwe is a winemaking legend – his quality wines perfectly reflect the character and terroir of the Cape. He produces great red wines – excellent accompaniments for hearty main courses. The winemaker uses a combination of traditional and modern methods in the production process. The van der Merwe family has owned a small estate “Mooi Uitsig” since 2005. The vineyard offers a breathtaking view from Cape Hangklip to the Tygerberg Hills.
