The people, the terroir and the vision of Olifantsberg

Situated on the slopes of the Olifantsberg mountain, with sweeping views over the Breedekloof valley, Olifantsberg produces wines whose character is inextricably linked to their origin. For around ten years, Olifantsberg has been run by Ferdi and Elizma Visser – a dedicated winemaking couple who convincingly combine tradition and modern winemaking philosophy.

Elizma Visser is responsible for the winery’s viticulture and agricultural strategy. Her talent and keen sense of terroir have been recognized internationally: Tim Atkin named her “Young Winemaker of the Year” in 2021. He has currently awarded all Olifantsberg wines 93 to 96 points.

The winemaking is a joint project between Ferdi and Elizma – characterized by respect for nature, minimal intervention in the cellar and the clear goal of bringing the terroir of the Breedekloof Valley authentically into the glass. Ferdi is also responsible for sales and marketing, ensuring that the craft and vision are consistently represented to the outside world.

The wines of Olifantsberg – quiet wines with great depth

The Olifantsberg winery’s own cellar is powered by solar energy and has a modern water treatment plant – a conscious step to keep the ecological footprint as careful as the style of the wines themselves. These are produced under demanding natural conditions that significantly shape their character.

Strong winds blow through the Breedekloof Valley, putting the vines to the test, but these winds allow the vines to produce smaller, more concentrated berries that give the wines intensity, structure and lively energy. The grape varieties are specifically selected according to their suitability for the natural environment of the vineyard. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Roussanne and Chenin Blanc are at the heart of the work and produce outstanding wines that are perfectly suited to the estate’s environment.

The wines from Olifantsberg reflect what the Breedekloof wine region is known for: fresh, fruity white wines and tasty red wines. They are refined, expressive wines that don’t have to be loud to inspire.

Conclusion

Olifantsberg is a wine estate that enriches our range with precise, characterful wines that are deeply connected to their origins and impressively reflect the Breedekloof Valley in the glass. We are therefore delighted to present our latest wines from Olifantsberg.
