Swartland

Together with the districts of Cape Town, Darling, Franschhoek, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Tulbagh and Wellington, Swartland is part of South Africa’s Coastal Region wine region. The district is considered a young up-and-comer. The vineyards and wineries in this extensive area are often widely scattered, which is rather untypical for South African winegrowing.

The district, which is about an hour’s drive from Cape Town, used to be known for growing wheat and cattle farming. Today, more and more innovative and young wine specialists are settling here. As the area is very dry and warm, particularly fruity and full-bodied Sauvignon Blancs were initially produced. After some time, however, excellent Shiraz and Rhône blends with their own “Swartland style” were also produced.

At Savinis you will find the best producers from the Swartland region such as Allesverloren, Babylon’s Peak, De Toren and Spice Route.

Allesverloren

Allesverloren is the only estate-registered wine estate in the South African wine-growing region of Swartland where only red wine is grown.

The name dates back to 1806, when the first owner wanted to sell his first wines in Cape Town. On his return, the farm was destroyed and the house burnt down – so “all was lost”. The Malan family, now in the fifth generation, has owned the winery since 1872 and can therefore look back on a long tradition of winegrowing.

The vines lie between 171m and 370m above sea level. The soil consists of sandstone and slate and gives Allesverloren’s wines their typical taste: robust, tannic and concentrated fruit.

The owner and winemaker Danie Malan has already pressed various award-winning wines. Thanks to his 1996 Shiraz, he was named South African Winemaker of the Year in 1998. He won one of the coveted prizes at the Vinexpo in Bordeaux with his 1989 Shiraz. In 1993, he received the Peter Schultz Award for his port wine at the Calitzdorp Port Festival.
