Swartland

Together with the districts of Cape Town, Darling, Franschhoek, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Tulbagh and Wellington, Swartland is part of South Africa’s Coastal Region wine region. The district is considered a young up-and-comer. The vineyards and wineries in this extensive area are often widely scattered, which is rather untypical for South African winegrowing.

The district, which is about an hour’s drive from Cape Town, used to be known for growing wheat and cattle farming. Today, more and more innovative and young wine specialists are settling here. As the area is very dry and warm, particularly fruity and full-bodied Sauvignon Blancs were initially produced. After some time, however, excellent Shiraz and Rhône blends with their own “Swartland style” were also produced.

At Savinis you will find the best producers from the Swartland region such as Allesverloren, Babylon’s Peak, De Toren and Spice Route.

Babylon’s Peak

The Babylon’s Peak vineyard is located on the slopes of the Paardeberg between Paarl and Malmesbury in South Africa. The name of the winery is derived from a very high granite peak on the farm, which the locals call “Babylon’s Peak”.

The vineyard has been in the Basson family for four generations. Stephan Basson is the owner, viticulturist and winemaker of the 250-hectare estate. In 2000, he renovated the wine cellar to realize his dream of producing wine.

The vines are constantly exposed to cool winds from the Atlantic, which is why it is noticeably cooler there than in the hot plains of Swartland. For this reason, excellent “Rhônestyle” wines from Shiraz, Carignan, Viognier, Roussanne, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage and Chenin Blanc thrive on the estate. In the three consecutive harvest years 2007, 2008 and 2009, the estate won a Veritas Gold Award for its Chenin Blanc.
