Beautiful, intense purple red, the broad berry bouquet is accompanied by beautiful roasted aromas and a fine spiciness. Round on the palate with a full body and beautiful freshness, present tannins are well integrated. Elegant and complex at the same time, it strives for the ultimate balance between fruit and the sweet and spicy barrel aromas. Long on the finish.

Stellenbosch

The region around the town of Stellenbosch is probably one of the best-known places in South Africa where wine is grown. It is located in the South African province of Western Cape, which borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Over 120 wine estates are located in Stellenbosch. They all benefit from the optimal climatic conditions required for top-quality winegrowing. The climate is Mediterranean, sunny and relatively dry in summer, but with sufficient rainfall in winter. The ocean within sight provides refreshing breezes and sufficient humidity, which are decisive factors for slow and harmonious fruit development, especially in midsummer. In the Bottelary area, which is considered the best red wine area in the region, fertile, stony granite soils ensure the top quality of the wines produced there. The foothills of the Simonsberg are also among the best red wine regions in the country. The summer days are long, there are cool breezes from the sea and the soil is excellent – red granite with a high clay content that retains water well. Some vines are planted on slate, which holds a lot of water in winter but dries out quickly in summer and therefore needs to be irrigated.

Stellenbosch is home to some of the most famous wine estates in South Africa. Traditional producers such as Aaldering, Asara, Babylon’s Peak, Bein, Graceland, Delheim, Kaapzicht, Kanonkop, Kleinood, Knorhoek, Meerlust, Morgenster, Quoin Rock, Van Ryn and Villiera are at home here.

Bein

Swiss couple Luca and Ingrid Bein emigrated to South Africa in 1999 and have been living the dream of owning their own winery in Stellenbosch ever since. Stellenbosch is the most important wine-growing region in South Africa. Originally both had their own practice as veterinarians in Switzerland – during a second degree in viticulture and oenology in Stellenbosch, they learned viticulture and bought a small plot of vines in Stellenbosch.

Only Merlot is planted on 2.2 hectares. Petrus Place is ideal for Merlot. The vineyard is situated on a cool southern slope of the Stellenbosch Polkadraai Hills, 190 meters above sea level and offers a beautiful, sweeping view of False Bay. It is situated on deep, well-drained and highly weathered granite soil. The climate is ideal for the wines, as it is Mediterranean, sunny and relatively dry in summer, but with sufficient rainfall in winter. But the ocean within sight also provides refreshing breezes and sufficient humidity – especially in midsummer. These are decisive factors for slow and harmonious fruit development.

The wine matures for around 12 months in new French oak barrels. The Bein couple produce a typical Pomerol style. Depending on the vintage, it is blended with a few percent Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Cabernet Franc.

The fact that the Bein winery is on the right track is also shown by John Platter’s ratings, which point steeply upwards towards 5-star wines. The Merlot was also highly rated in Vinum and Weinwisser in Switzerland.
