Franschhoek

Together with the districts of Cape Town, Darling, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Swartland, Tulbagh and Wellington, Franschhoek belongs to the South African wine region of Coastal Region. The name is Afrikaans and means “French corner” and dates back to 1688. At that time, around 200 Frenchmen settled in this valley.

The district, which is around 60 km from Cape Town, is one of the most important wine-growing regions in South Africa. Excellent Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon are produced here.

At Savinis you will find the best producers from the Franschhoek region such as Boschendal or Haute Cabrière / Pierre Jourdan. The Haute Cabrière wine estate can look back on a long wine-growing history. In 1694, the land, which is located on the banks of the Franschhoek River, was handed over to the Huguenot Pierre Jourdan.

Boschendal

The Boschendal Wine Estate is situated between Simonsberg and the Groot Drakenstein Mountains at the entrance to the Franschhoek Valley. It is one of the oldest wine farms in the New World. The Huguenot Jean Le Long founded it in 1685 and the brothers Pierre, Abraham and Jacques de Villier took over in 1715. They helped the winery to achieve greatness and respect.

The farm covers 3500 hectares, of which 448 hectares are used for growing vines. It lies at 120 to 450 meters above sea level and stretches for 14 km along the banks of the Berg River. There is a large difference in altitude within the farm, which is why every grape variety has found a suitable place. Semillon grows on the clay soil (120 m above sea level). At 250 meters above sea level, the red wines Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and the white wine Sauvignon Blanc grow. Another 100 meters higher up, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot grow on the Tukulu soils.

In 1996, J.C. Bekker took over Boschendal as Winter. His aim is to produce fine wines with depth and concentration. He has not only succeeded in this with the beautiful Merlot and Shiraz. The winery produces 240,000 cases a year. In 2002, 12 of more than 20 different wines were awarded four stars in the John Platter Guide.
