Stellenbosch

The region around the town of Stellenbosch is probably one of the best-known places in South Africa where wine is grown. It is located in the South African province of Western Cape, which borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Over 120 wine estates are located in Stellenbosch. They all benefit from the optimal climatic conditions required for top-quality winegrowing. The climate is Mediterranean, sunny and relatively dry in summer, but with sufficient rainfall in winter. The ocean within sight provides refreshing breezes and sufficient humidity, which are decisive factors for slow and harmonious fruit development, especially in midsummer. In the Bottelary area, which is considered the best red wine area in the region, fertile, stony granite soils ensure the top quality of the wines produced there. The foothills of the Simonsberg are also among the best red wine regions in the country. The summer days are long, there are cool breezes from the sea and the soil is excellent – red granite with a high clay content that retains water well. Some vines are planted on slate, which holds a lot of water in winter but dries out quickly in summer and therefore needs to be irrigated.

Stellenbosch is home to some of the most famous wine estates in South Africa. Traditional producers such as Aaldering, Asara, Babylon’s Peak, Bein, Graceland, Delheim, Kaapzicht, Kanonkop, Kleinood, Knorhoek, Meerlust, Morgenster, Quoin Rock, Van Ryn and Villiera are at home here.

Kaapzicht

Farm

Kaapzicht was first mentioned in 1712 under the name Friesland. Since 1946, the winery has been owned by the Steytler family, who are now in their fourth generation of managing it. From the highest point of the farm, there is a spectacular view stretching from Cape Town all the way to Table Mountain—hence the name Kaapzicht, which means “view of the Cape” in Afrikaans.

The vineyards are located primarily on warm northwest-facing slopes and also benefit from the cooling sea breezes of False Bay. This combination ensures optimally ripened grapes with plenty of fruit, elegance, and freshness.

The vines are deliberately not irrigated. As a result, the roots must penetrate deep into the weathered granite soil, where they find water and nutrients. This results in low yields, but the grapes are exceptionally concentrated and aromatic.

Some of the oldest vineyards are still planted as traditional bush vines. These include Pinotage, Hanepoot (Muscat d’Alexandrie), and several Chenin Blanc plots. These vines are tended and harvested entirely by hand.

A particular rarity is the approximately six-hectare Chenin Blanc vineyard dating back to 1947. It is one of the oldest Chenin Blanc vineyards in South Africa that is still in production. Although the gnarled, old vines yield only small harvests, they produce wines of exceptional concentration, complexity, and depth.

Winemaker

Since February 2009, Danie Steytler Jr. has been in charge of Kaapzicht’s wines, succeeding his father, Danie Steytler Sr. After completing his studies at the University of Stellenbosch, he gained his first experience working with Kevin Arnold (Waterford Estate) and Gary Jordan (Jordan Wine Estate). Subsequent positions took him to France, New Zealand, Napa Valley, and Sweden.

He focuses particularly on the two grape varieties that have made Kaapzicht internationally renowned: Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. The very first vintage of Chenin Blanc, from 1947, received the coveted 5-star rating in Platter’s Wine Guide—an honor reserved for only the finest wines in South Africa.

The robust Cape Blend, with its high proportion of Pinotage, and the elegant Bordeaux blends are also among the winery’s flagship wines. With great passion, respect for family tradition, and a keen eye for quality, Danie Steytler is impressively continuing Kaapzicht’s success story.

Wines

Kaapzicht is located in the Bottelary Hills, one of Stellenbosch’s most renowned red wine regions. The combination of a warm climate, cooling sea breezes, and the characteristic weathered granite soils creates ideal conditions for wines that are both full-bodied and elegant.

Pinotage, in particular—South Africa’s flagship grape variety—is right at home here. For decades, Kaapzicht has been one of its most prominent ambassadors and regularly wins national and international awards. The 1998 vintage alone won both the ABSA Pinotage Competition and the Wine Magazine Pinotage Competition—impressive proof of the exceptional quality of Kaapzicht’s wines.

Today, Kaapzicht stands for distinctive, authentic wines with a sense of place that, year after year, impressively reflect the potential of the Bottelary Hills.
