Opaque purple-red color. Powerful plums, blackberries, mulberries, rich vanilla, layers of smoke and roasted nuts on the nose. Followed by a palate packed with plums, cherries, black figs, pomegranate, dark chocolate, blackberries and spicy oak. The beautifully integrated soft tannins pair with the acidity, resulting in a wonderfully balanced wine with a long finish.

Stellenbosch

The region around the town of Stellenbosch is probably one of the best-known places in South Africa where wine is grown. It is located in the South African province of Western Cape, which borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Over 120 wine estates are located in Stellenbosch. They all benefit from the optimal climatic conditions required for top-quality winegrowing. The climate is Mediterranean, sunny and relatively dry in summer, but with sufficient rainfall in winter. The ocean within sight provides refreshing breezes and sufficient humidity, which are decisive factors for slow and harmonious fruit development, especially in midsummer. In the Bottelary area, which is considered the best red wine area in the region, fertile, stony granite soils ensure the top quality of the wines produced there. The foothills of the Simonsberg are also among the best red wine regions in the country. The summer days are long, there are cool breezes from the sea and the soil is excellent – red granite with a high clay content that retains water well. Some vines are planted on slate, which holds a lot of water in winter but dries out quickly in summer and therefore needs to be irrigated.

Stellenbosch is home to some of the most famous wine estates in South Africa. Traditional producers such as Aaldering, Asara, Babylon’s Peak, Bein, Graceland, Delheim, Kaapzicht, Kanonkop, Kleinood, Knorhoek, Meerlust, Morgenster, Quoin Rock, Van Ryn and Villiera are at home here.

Kanonkop

The famous Kanonkop wine estate is located on the foothills of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, one of the best red wine regions in South Africa. The Kanonkop Estate produces the best Pinotage in South Africa – a cross between Cinsault and Pinotage, which was bred in South Africa in 1925. As early as 1959, the Kanonkop Pinotage performed better than Cabernet Sauvignon at the traditional Cape Wine Show, which can perhaps be explained by the advanced age of the vines. Pinotage wines are particularly predestined for the production of storable wines.

The name of the wine farm comes from a cannon that stood on a hill to greet ships arriving in South Africa. This is because the farmers knew that they could deliver wine and fresh vegetables to the port. A model of this cannon stands in the entrance to the wine farm today.

The vineyard covers a total of 100 hectares. This includes 50 hectares for Pinotage, which nevertheless cannot meet demand. The remaining 50 hectares are used for 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.
