A bright, clear, medium ruby red. Violets, spice and dark berries on the nose. The palate is lively with a hint of complex spices, such as freshly ground black pepper and licorice.

Stellenbosch
The region around the town of Stellenbosch is probably one of the best-known places in South Africa where wine is grown. It is located in the South African province of Western Cape, which borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
Over 120 wine estates are located in Stellenbosch. They all benefit from the optimal climatic conditions required for top-quality winegrowing. The climate is Mediterranean, sunny and relatively dry in summer, but with sufficient rainfall in winter. The ocean within sight provides refreshing breezes and sufficient humidity, which are decisive factors for slow and harmonious fruit development, especially in midsummer. In the Bottelary area, which is considered the best red wine area in the region, fertile, stony granite soils ensure the top quality of the wines produced there. The foothills of the Simonsberg are also among the best red wine regions in the country. The summer days are long, there are cool breezes from the sea and the soil is excellent – red granite with a high clay content that retains water well. Some vines are planted on slate, which holds a lot of water in winter but dries out quickly in summer and therefore needs to be irrigated.

Stellenbosch is home to some of the most famous wine estates in South Africa. Traditional producers such as Aaldering, Asara, Babylon’s Peak, Bein, Graceland, Delheim, Kaapzicht, Kanonkop, Kleinood, Knorhoek, Meerlust, Morgenster, Quoin Rock, Van Ryn and Villiera are at home here.

Kleinood
Kleinood is a 22-hectare wine estate on the Blaauwklippen Trail, just outside Stellenbosch. This exclusive wine region is home to over 120 wine estates, all of which benefit from the optimal climatic conditions required for viticulture in this category. Well-known and up-and-coming wine estates such as Kanonkop, Kaapzicht and Villiera are also at home here.
In 2000, Gerard and Libby De Villiers bought the vineyard and named it Kleinood. In Afrikaans, this means “something small and valuable”. And indeed it is: small in terms of acreage – and valuable because South African wines of the highest quality are produced here.

Gerard De Villiers is working his way towards producing the world’s best Shiraz wines in these excellent vineyard sites in the Helderberg Mountains. He spares no effort: the plots are a maximum of half a hectare in size and planted with the best French Shiraz clones. There is also a block of Viognier and a small block of Mourvedre. The grapes are all harvested by hand and then manually selected on a sorting belt. The wine is matured in 500-liter French oak barrels. The result is of exceptional sensual perfection.
