Calitzdorp

Although Calitzdorp is not part of the Coastal Region, it is known as part of the Klein Karoo region – a fascinating wine region in the dry heart of the South African semi-desert. The region lies at the transition between the coast and the inland and is particularly famous for its port wines.

Calitzdorp is nestled between the Swartberg and Rooiberg mountains. The climate is hot and dry, with cold winters and long, sunny summers. Rainfall is infrequent – averaging around 200 to 300 mm per year – forcing the vineyards to grow deep roots. These conditions promote concentrated aromas and make the region ideal for Portuguese grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão.

At Savinis you will find outstanding producers from Calitzdorp such as Boplaas , De Krans and Axehill . The Boplaas wine estate is a genuine family business with roots dating back to 1880 and is one of South Africa’s leading port wine producers. A visit to Calitzdorp is not only worthwhile for the wines – the picturesque landscape and the warm hospitality of the region are also unforgettable.
