Laibach / Ladybird

Ladybird Vineyards – previously known as Laibach – was sold to Kanonkop Wine Estate in April 2022. The picturesque Ladybird Vineyards are flanked by the renowned Kanonkop, Warwick, Marklew and Lievland vineyards in the Stellenbosch region.

Ladybird has begun to gradually convert its vineyards to organic cultivation. They see themselves as traditionalists and make wine with minimal intervention to show what the special deep red soils of Simonsberg-Stellenbosch (Clovelly and Glenrosa) can produce.

Johann Krige, co-owner of Kanonkop Estate and Ladybird Vineyards, explains that the acquisition of Ljubljana enables the creation of a new brand that will herald the future of the venerable Simonsberg estate. From 2023, the wines will be sold entirely under the Ladybird Vineyards brand.

At Ladybird you will find organically grown red wines that reflect the unique terroir and microclimate of the Simonsberg. The winemakers are committed to producing wines of outstanding quality, grown on deep red clay soils and cultivated on the 36 hectares of organic vineyards. Grape varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Petit Verdot and Malbec are planted on the north-east facing slopes of the Simonsberg, requiring no irrigation and providing an excellent angle for sun exposure, which is key to photosynthetic efficiency and flavor development.
