Red wines
Red wines from South Africa have long been part of the country’s diverse wine history. South Africa has its own grape variety, which was bred in 1925. It is the red grape variety Pinotage.
Today, viticulture is an important industrial sector in South Africa. Worldwide, South Africa is responsible for around 3% of annual wine production. The Wine of Origin quality wine system, which South Africa set up in 1973 and in which all well-known and established South African producers participate, deserves special attention. The corresponding seal with the inscription Wine of Origin, which you will find on the top of the bottle, guarantees the information on the origin, vintage and grape variety of the wine. There is a Wine and Spirit Board, which is responsible for certifying the wines and monitoring the regulations.
In South Africa, wine-growing areas cover around 100,000 hectares of land. The most important and largest wine-growing areas are in the south, mainly in the South African province of Western Cape, where the famous wine-growing region of Stellenbosch is also located. There are over 120 wine estates in Stellenbosch alone, where highly decorated and award-winning wines, as well as red wines in South Africa, are produced with a great deal of passion and experience.
