Rijk’s

Rijk’s Private Wine Cellar is a new, until recently relatively unknown winery from South Africa. It is located in the Breede River Valley – a few kilometers north of Tulbagh and about 80 minutes’ drive north of Cape Town. The winery is surrounded by three mountains: Witzenberg to the east, Winterhoek Mountains to the north and the Obiqua Mountains to the west.

In 1996, Neville Dorrington bought 136 hectares of land in this magnificent valley basin and planted 30 hectares of vines, although experts advised him against it. The first wines went on sale after 2000 and with each passing year, the quality improved. A lot of manual work and trial and error led to success. The many awards won in recent years prove that Rjiks has managed to join the ranks of the very best producers.

Oenologist Pierre Wahl has an excellent understanding of how to combine the special features of the barren natural environment with traditional oenology. The Pinotage wines, which are stronger and richer than usual, are particularly successful. But the Chenin Blanc also impresses with plenty of power, finesse and elegance. The focus of production is on naturalness, so that each wine can express the identity of its origin.
