Spice Route
Spice Route
Spice Route is an expression of adventure, craftsmanship and South African terroir. The winery is located in the picturesque Swartland region – north of Cape Town – and was founded in 1997 by Charles Back, the visionary owner of Fairview. He recognized the enormous potential of the dry, slate-rich soils and warm climate of this underrated wine region.
The name “Spice Route” is a tribute to the old spice trade routes between Europe and the Orient – and symbolizes the variety of flavours and spices that are reflected in every wine produced by the company. The aim: to produce authentic wines with a strong character that express the characteristics of the Swartland.

The vines grow mainly on dry soils without artificial irrigation. This ensures low yields but enormous concentration and depth in the wines. Fermentation takes place traditionally with natural yeasts, and many wines are matured in open fermentation vats or large barrels – with minimal intervention to preserve the natural expressiveness of the grapes.
Spice Route is particularly well known for its powerful red wines made from Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre, as well as its unique white wines made from Chenin Blanc and Viognier. Each vintage reveals new facets of the region – with notes of black fruit, pepper, spices and a distinctive minerality.
