Suddenly everything makes a gin

When it comes to South Africa, most connoisseurs first think of exquisite wine and tasty meat. The fact that the country also produces exclusive gin was long considered an insider tip among gin lovers. South Africa has a huge variety of distilled botanicals.

Unique to gins from South Africa are the plants and herbs used, which ensure natural, balanced, spicy and extremely aromatic taste experiences. It is not uncommon for gins to be created from up to 15 different African plants and herbs. The aromas are reminiscent of citrus fruits, juniper or even spices such as coriander, cardamom or liquorice.

There is a story behind every gin

South African gin is characterized by the land and nature. It is particularly balanced as it is produced with pure spring water from the deep soils. Each distillery has its own history, which shapes its own plant-rich spirit.

Inverroche Gin as a pioneer

Inverroche is considered a pioneer in the country, refining a wide variety of South African botanicals into premium gins with its Classic, Verdant and Amber gins. Cape Town, where Inverroche produces its products, is the gin hotspot and countless small distilleries are following Inverroche’s example.

The Inverroche distillery was founded in 2011 by Lorna Scott at Still Bay. It is located on the Indian Ocean, very close to the coastal fishing village of Still Bay on the River Gouhou. The rocks and soil are mainly limestone. Inverroche is a word combination of “inver”, an old Scottish term for the confluence of water (the Scott family originally came from Scotland) and “roche”, the French word for stone, as a reference to the limestone in the area. There is an incredible variety of plants and flowers here. Botanists count over 10,000 species. A perfect treasure trove for the incomparable Inverroche gins.

Six Dogs Gin Karoo – a special sense for plants

At the Six Dogs distillery, it all began in a shed where the owner family’s six dogs were normally housed. In this shed was an old copper still. The dream of producing a gin that was better than the gin produced by the local distillery industry grew. The distiller Charles Bryant was soon supported by his brother Glenn and his friend Luigi Marucchi. When it came to distillation, they built a traditional copper still to exact specifications. Their research into molecular distillation revealed that some of the delicate botanicals were better preserved when distilled under vacuum. What began as research into technology and botany developed into a passion – and thus Six Dogs Karoo Gin was born. Many of the botanicals grow in the Karoo.

Experience your blue wonder with the Six Dogs Gin Blue

The Blue Gin from Six Dogs is a special highlight: The intense blue comes from the blue pea plant. By adding tonic water or a little lemon juice, the color changes from blue to pink. This is thanks to the magical blue pea flower and rose pelargonium. In addition to various botanicals, juniper, naartjie, angelica and coriander give the gin its special taste. The blue color is completely natural and can fade over time. It is therefore important to store the gin in a dark and cool place, preferably in the fridge after opening.

Ibhu Indlovu – with extracts from elephant dung

Indlovu is the word for elephant in various African languages. This is not a typical gin. Ibhu Indlovu is an exclusive gin for connoisseurs who love unique flavors. The key ingredients in this gin are extracted from elephant dung, which is washed, disinfected and dried. It is best enjoyed with a little ice. Incidentally, 15 percent of the proceeds from the sale of this gin are donated to the Africa Foundation.
